Mary Heilmann asked me to interpret her abstract painting for this commission. We selected the luminous sunbaked colors from Bisazza Mosaic Tiles for her off-kilter geometric fields and gesturally sweeping outlines. In order to make a template the actual size (25 foot by 25 foot), I sewed together five canvas drop cloths, nailed the huge canvas to the side of my barn, projected her painting, then outlined the shapes with a paintbrush. Such was shipped ahead and became the cartoon I used to lay-out the mosaic. In the Spanish sun, the colors radiate off the plaster walls of the villa and the movement of water in the reflecting pool wonderfully accentuates form and line.
